Cupcake Wars

I love watching Cupcake Wars & have made a few varieties as of late. With my Young Women we made red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting to go along with the value Individual Worth which is represented by the color red. We had an hour and a half to make these and on the show they get two hours to make 1000 cupcakes. Needless to say with 3 leaders and 3 girls we barely got them done in time. Regretfully, I didn't take a picture.

For Madelyn's blessing my sister and I made cookies and cream cupcakes. They turned out so cute and tasted even better. I'm excited to make a festive St. Patrick's Day cupcake. I'm thinking key lime:)

Michael blessed Madelyn this Sunday. It was a very special blessing and day. We were surrounded by the BEST family and friends. Every time I look at my beautiful baby girl I cannot help, but get choked up. I feel so privileged to be able to witness one of Heavenly Father's miracles daily ( times three). I feel so undeserving, but am oh so grateful for the greatest gifts of all. The icing on the cake is that we will be together forever!

We, actually I, decided to make the Valentines this year. I made the shovels for James' teachers, my mia maids, and some of my besties. They were super fun to do and really simple to make. The rockets were such a cute idea, but 15 of them proved to be a little much. I did these cute things and made dozens of chocolate covered strawberries. All I can say is Happy Valentine's Day to all the people I love!!

Madelyn is almost three weeks. I am trying to treasure every second with her because I know time flies. My first baby is 5, and I still cannot believe he was as little as Madelyn. I feel like someone should pinch me because I must be dreaming. We have been through so much the past couple of years. It feels wonderful to reflect and know that everything that has happened has brought us to this point. I wouldn't change anything!! I'm so grateful to my Father in Heaven for giving me 3 precious gifts. Most days I feel undeserving, but I'm thankful nonetheless.

7lbs 6 ounces, 19 inches long.

Better pictures to come, these definitely don't do her justice. We are loving THREE! Madelyn is super snugly and James and Mya adore her. They cannot stop kissing her. We are incredibly blessed!

P.S. The labor was fast and besides the hot spot where the epidural didn't take (lower left quadrant of my uterus) it was a breeze. I only had to push one time and had a much better labor in general than the others. The after cramps on the other hand were a totally different story. They were a nightmare. They were almost as painful as the contractions...and they lasted longer and were extremely unpredictable. On day four, the pain on a scale of one to ten is a two. (They asked me this about 20 times in the 25 hours I was there ;) ) I was so grateful that my Doctor (Dr. Houser) was able to make it to deliver Madelyn. One out of three isn't bad. It made the experience very personal and one that I will never forget. Given my history of fast labors, she got to the hospital an hour before I had Madelyn and was even able to do some of the last checks.

I'm sure you would love a picture, but there is currently not one available. On a better note, baby Madelyn will be here Friday, January 14, my induction date. I will not leave the hospital without her!

We went to the zoo one last time before our membership expired. We had a wonderful time, the kids just love it there. Mya told everyone for a week about the zoo, even strangers at Walmart. I just love them!

James was playing with his besties. One minute he was running full speed ahead and the next minute he bit the pavement, hard. I ran over to him and thought probably a scraped knee, no such luck. I went to pick him up and that's when I noticed the blood. Lots of blood all over his face, I couldn't tell where it was coming from. He was hysterical and I screamed for Aimee to get me a towel. I tried to keep the blood from getting on our clothes, but cradling him was making the blood run into his eyes. After Aimee wiped some of the blood off, we saw the gash right between the brows favoring the left. We knew that was hospital worthy. We stayed super calm and Aimee helped me load him into the car. I was dying inside as I listened to both of the kids cry the entire ride to Children's telling them everything was going to be okay. Mya: "My brother, my brother..." Normally under those circumstances the noise would have forced me to yell profusely at them to be quiet while driving, but I focused on getting there. I said millions of silent prayers and the Lord helped me through.

The culprit: Spiderman sunglasses. When he fell the sunglasses embedded into his forehead. This allowed for a clean straight cut which will allow minimal to no scarring. Our hero (Michael Wayne aka Daddy) arrived shortly after at Children's and everyone was instantly better. Daddy is everyone's rock and can fix anything especially boo boo's. James Michael, Mommy is so so proud of how brave you were. You are my shinning star and my favorite James in the whole wide world!

I had a great wish fulfilled. Bev (my Mother-in-law) and I went to Illinois for 5 days without the kids thanks to my wonderful husband. We went their primarily for Kiss' baby shower, but extended it just a tad. It was wonderful to be with Kristin (Kiss). I miss her so much, it's actually painful. The one thing we did quite a bit of was EAT. We wanted to give Bev a real taste of Chicago. We had Portillos Chicago style hot dogs, Rosati's Chicago style Pizza, and the famous Girodano's deep dish. All of this was after busting my butt to lose 8lbs before I left. Needless to say I gained 2lbs back:( Oh well it was worth it!! I missed Michael, James, & Mya so much, but I didn't want to leave my sister. I always wondered what it would be like for Kiss to have a baby. She has loved mine so deeply as if they were hers, and I thought when she had her own she would feel differently, but I KNOW how she feels because I am going to love that little guy as much as mine. It breaks my heart that I might not be there when he's born. It's difficult to explain, it's as if it's happening to me, but I'm not carrying him. My only dream is to live next to my sister one day, and hopefully it's in this lifetime.

AND this version Mommy was a Prophet called to preach the word, tried to make us listen, but nobody heard. They were busy sinning, Mommy preached in vain, they should have listened when they saw the rain. Kiss Kiss came to visit us for her spring break. People kept asking her, "Why on Earth would you want to spend your spring break in Ohio?" ummm because I'm here. That will always trump a great luxury and/or a beach vacation. We had a wonderful time. Of course it went by way too fast. We spent our time well, entertaining the kids, which in turn is fun for all because Kiss and I will always be kids, especially when we are together. I was ecstatic that no one got us confused as she is 8 months pregnant, phew....but we did get a few are you guys twins? Which we will never get tired of people asking. I was so grateful for her necessary naps, they allowed me to secretly close my eyes as well:) Not only was she exhausted from being pregnant, but she was exhausted because she becomes a mommy to my kids, as they prefer her over me me. What kid wouldn't love a person that looks exactly like their Mommy, but spoils them to death??? They also couldn't get over her belly and that she is going to have a baby. James wanted him to come out NOW!! Mya was constantly rubbing it and saying baby.

We also went to Rule 3, Tuesday night basketball (where Kristin not only played, but never missed a shot and swished a three pointer...crraaaazzzzaaayyyy, and of course we shopped till we dropped and ate and ate and ate! It was an incredible week, ranking up there with the best everrrrrrr!

Easter

I love Easter, it brings about the feelings of hope and renewal as we are able to testify of the love that our Savior has for us individually, and personalize the atonement and it's meaning as well as the resurrection. This day is especially important to me and always will be. I was baptized Easter Sunday nine years ago. As I reflect back to that day I am overcome with joy and the spirit. My heart is full. It was the best decision I have ever made. I am so blessed and with gratitude can truly say the gospel has changed my life. I know that God lives and Jesus Christ is our Savior and that he died for us so that we can return to our Father in Heaven. I have a great testimony of the power of prayer. I know that families are eternal, and I love that. I love my Michael, James, and Mya so much.

This is my favorite Easter hymn and brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. It's so powerful yet beautiful.

James is definitely our comic relief. Here are some hilarious conversations and statements he has made the last few days.

Mya: Mommy, I have a booger

James: Eat em Mya, boogers taste so good!

Mommy: James, don't tell her that, do you eat your boogers?

James: NO way, I just thought it would be funny if Mya ate her booger.

Mommy: (Trying to catch my breath from laughing so hard) Mya, please don't eat your boogers, James was kidding, and it's disgusting.

Michael and I were having a conversation about how James' behavior was at the library. I started spelling some of the things so James wouldn't understand what we were saying. He tends to have really big ears. He said rather emphatically, "No spanish words please!"

I was laying with James before bed and he asked about Michael's dad. I told him he passed away before Michael and I were married. He said, "Oh no Mommy, who killed him?" After regaining my composure, I explained that most people who die aren't killed. There are accidents, and natural causes, and diseases...etc. What are we teaching him??

We Wish You A Merry Christmas...

We did our Gingerbread house like we do every year, it turned out great. I love them so much, they were absolute joy to watch this Christmas. To see the excitement in their eyes and to believe is just wonderful. We also spent a lot of time discussing Jesus' birth and having family home evenings about it. James is really understanding and it's beautiful to watch. Although, one night we were laying in bed and he asked, "Mommy, how does Jesus grow up so fast?" I asked him, "What do you mean? He said, "Well he's a baby every year and then he's grows up to be a man." I had to explain to him that we celebrate His Birth every Christmas, then it clicked. His wheels are always turning!

Mya was a fantastic taster and lick and sticker!

Baby It's Christmas all Over Again...

My Christmas post is late, but as they say better late than never! We did tons of things! It was a Storts Family Christmas this year. The kids never get tired of each other. We went to Rule 3 and that place rocks. I swear they made it just for me, because I am the biggest kid. What can I say? I just love to have fun!

I am beyond sick, I'm not sure how I made it to the computer to type, but I didn't want to forget the medical advice I've received from Dr. James Storts.

1. While on the toilet..."Mommy, if you have diarrhea don't forget to take a deep breath."

2. For my horrible sore throat..."Mommy it's simple, don't swallow."

3. "Hot cocoa helps anything"

4. James I'm not sure hot cocoa will help..."Mommy, then have a popsicle, they're only 300 calories."

And lastly, as I sat in the chair of his room, He asked me why I wasn't going to lay with him. I told him because I was sick and I didn't want to get him sick. He pondered that for a few seconds and said, "Well how did you get sick?" I said, "I think Uncle Mark got me sick." James asked,"Did he breathe down your throat, and that's why it's sore?" Funny Kid, I said no he probably breathed on me and I got his sick germs. That's why it's important to wash our hands and stay away from sick people!

The Family shot! We have yet to get a perfect picture. I was so frustrated during this picture I wanted to smash the camera, how hard is it to look at the camera and smile...really really difficult apparently!

One more thing: I found matching ties for the boys. I saw the perfect Christmas tie for James at Children's Place in October, but I didn't buy it because it wasn't on sale. Biggest mistake ever! When I went to find it 3 weeks before Christmas it was no where. I mean no where not at Jeffersonville, not in IL not at all 5ish Columbus locations...so I went to Ebay and found it there. Meanwhile, nervous about the bidding and getting it the Sunday before Christmas, I had a sudden thought, maybe I should ask Lesley. I described the tie to my sister-in-law and asked if she had it and lo and behold she did! I was outbid the next day and the ties were the exact same! Why am I telling you this? Well because I'm not sure you can even tell that they're the same in any pictures we took, not just this one. I guess I knew and that's what matters!!

While Michael was taking the LSAT Grammy and I took the kiddos to Breakfast with Santa at Smith and Wollensky. The kids had so much fun, although their reaction to Santa Claus was puzzling. James was really excited at first, but was instantly sadden to find out Mrs. Claus wasn't there...From then on the photo opportunities went out the window. When Santa asked James what he wanted for Christmas, he said, "wrestlers" What the?? At least chose one of the 15 things we got you already or that you put on your original list... Mya on the other hand was terrified and trembled when he asked her what she wanted. Translation, Santa get out of my face that's all I want for Christmas!

Michael ran the Columbus 1/2 marathon in October. We have run every race together thus far, but I sat this one out thinking I'd be pregnant by now. (yeah we're not:() I am just so indescribably proud of My Michael. He ran 13.1 miles with little preparation. He is one of the busiest guys, and does it all for us. We got there just in time with our sign, and watching him cross the finish line and hear us screaming his name was priceless. We love you!!

A Reunion after 7 years!

When I was in Illinois I had the awesome opportunity to catch up with one of the sister missionaries that taught me the gospel. We have been in touch all along, but she recently moved to Illinois and I was able to sneak in a visit. We are both married now with two awesome, adorable children. I love Shannon so much. It's hard to express the gratitude in my heart for her. Although Shannon will take no credit, she was an instrument in the hands of Heavenly Father and was so close to him, and with that, and obedience was able to be what I needed at that time. She was my friend first. I will always be grateful for her and they way she dedicated herself to the work. I love the gospel with all my heart and have such a strong testimony of our Savior Jesus Christ and the atonement. The gospel changes people, and it did just that for me. I remember what life was like without it, and that's never a place I want to go back to. I am grateful for my forever family and especially for my wonderful husband. Marrying him was the second best decision I ever made. I cannot imagine my life without the gospel. So Shannon, this one's for you girl! I love you!

We put way too many bubbles in...At one point Mya couldn't even breathe she had bubbles up her nose, in her eyes and on her hands, so when she tried to wipe her face and nose it just got worse. Kiss and I nearly peed our pants from laughing so hard.

Little Faith

I have not blogged in awhile and normally only blog about happy or exciting times, but this post is a little different. I have been struggling lately with most areas of my life, especially with faith. I have even had feelings that perhaps I am meant to be miserable. I have always been the strong one in our family; the spiritual rock, the incredible optimist. I was at war with myself internally. I could not muster up any faith. I never would have thought that I could be in such a dark and down place especially being a convert and knowing the blessing of the gospel. It felt so wrong to be so empty inside especially since I have the best husband in the world and two beautiful kids. After sobbing for hours my husband held me and said, "I think you need to go visit your sister." We were supposed to go to IL just for the weekend, but Michael bought us train tickets and the kids and I stayed for over a week and he drove back by himself.

Michael must have been inspired, the trip was exactly what I needed. I felt a little better heading into Sunday, but was still aware of the uphill climb it seems Michael and I have in figuring out what's next in our lives (among other more personal trials) I was battling James in their sacrament meeting when I felt this undeniable pounding in my chest and the sweaty palms, the spirit was dragging me up to bear my testimony in a foreign place and I have little faith, so what on earth am I going to say? As I was walking up, another lady beat me to the pulpit, my first reaction turn around. I stayed strong and waited my turn, trying not to think about what I was going to say, and hoping and praying the spirit would help. I bore my testimony of struggle and hope and of Jesus Christ and his infinite atonement. I was met at the end of the meeting by strangers that really needed to hear my testimony. I was also handed a talk by a kind man, by Neal A Maxwell, But for a Small Moment. It was a tremendous talk that was also an answer to my prayers.

Monday night we went to Family Home Evening at the Holt's. They were a great family with four kids. Meredith (the mom) was such an amazing woman who welcomed me (us) with open arms. She was placed in my life at the perfect time. Just to listen to her go through some of the same things I am struggling with was exactly what I needed. My sister too is such a great example to me! I love her so much and wouldn't be where I am today without her.

My faith has been restored. For lack of a better phrase, "I'm back!" and it feels good!

Daddy could not say NO on vacation. He let James get out of taking a nap, and when it came to something the kids wanted he looked at me, not for reassurance, but for money. We had to get an $8 sword that lit up, a $5 bounce ball that lit up, some expensive G.I. Joes, and yes, $5 lollipops. Those are the only items I knew(know) about...

Kristin and I celebrated our golden birthday (27) in North Myrtle Beach! We ate at Greg Norman's Australian Grille. It was fabulous! It was right on the water. We weren't able to capture good pictures because of the sun. We also walked around barefoot landing and shopped. They must have known it was our Golden Birthday because they even had fireworks! (I found out later that they have them every Monday during the summer-oh well it was AWESOME!)

It was a long haul to North Myrtle Beach, but it was worth it! We loved the beach. James and Mya could not get enough! They became quite the little beach goers. Sand castles, waves, rock collecting, sandy pb & j sandwiches (Mya ate an entire gogurt that fell in the sand umpteen times) they were experts) They are my little brown-berries! There's nothing better than a little white bum running around the house! We got some much needed R&R and we were ready to come back home after 9 days.

Herpangina...what?

A few weeks ago, Michael and I decided to have our first over-night stay without the babies. It was interupted by a case of herpangina. (a strand of foot, hand, and mouth disease) It produces a high fever, and hundreds of tiny blisters in the mouth. Needless to say we a few hours at urgent care and our first night by ourselves sick with worry.

The was James' first Father/Son camp out. He absolutely loved it! Michael and James had so much fun. I think it took them a week to recover from sleep depravation. Nonetheless, that had so much fun and James is quite the little camper!

My dad was passing through Columbus and we were able to spend some time with him! It had been almost a year since I saw him last! Although it was short James and Mya really enjoyed him. In fact, Mya would not let him put her down. It's amazing how good it makes you feel when your kids are able to brighten someone's day, just because they're them. I could not have scripted a better visit. WE love you Papa (Daddy)!

The weather forecasters predicted rain and clouds the entire weekend. At about mile 3 the sun peeked out and the rest of the weekend was beautiful. We had an amazing time in Indy! We booked our hotel on priceline for $40 a night. Mya refused to sleep in the pack n' play the first night. She slept in between Michael and I in a queen sized bed, and woke up before 7am. We were exhausted, but luckily we still had a night before the race to try to get some much needed sleep. The kids loved the sliding glass doors. They played with them for hours.

On Friday morning, we checked out the pool and the hot tub. The kids loved it! Before lunch we met our friends Kristin and Paul and headed to the Expo to pick up our race packets and got all our free samples. Then IT happened. We were eating lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe and I went to hand the camera to Michael to take a picture of Kristin, Bev, and I and it fell right in my water glass. Yes, full immersion! The look on Michael's face was all I needed, I don't think he's ever been that mad before. Luckily Target was having a good sale, we ended up getting an upgraded version of the exact camera we had. And when Michael was leaving for work today he said, "Guess what Honey, I tried the old camera last night and it works!" ....go figure!

Saturday was race day! We got a 5am start. This allowed us to park, go to the bathroom, eat power bars, drink water, and take Bev and the kids to the finish line, so they could cheer us on! Michael and I agreed the day before that we would both run the 5k even though we signed up and paid for the half marathon, due to lack of training. As Michael and I walked back to the starting corrals, I asked him if he would regret not doing the half marathon. He said he would, and just like that he jumped into corral R and 45 minutes later he crossed the starting line. There were 35,000 people running in the event, and the 5k didn't start until after all the half marathoners crossed the starting line.

I was pumped for the 5k. I was a little nervous running alone, but my heart leapt out of my chest when I saw Bev cheering for me as I made the last turn for the finish line. I kissed her and saw that the babies were sleeping and dashed to the finish line. Running the 5K was awesome! Bev and I and the kids were able to watch Paul, Pete, Kristin J, Kristin P., and Michael cross the finish line, in that order. I was most proud of Michael, with absolutely no training he finished in under 3 hours. Michael even carried James across the finish line. The day was perfect!! We even made it back to the hotel to check out in time.

The last two days we spent at Kristin & Paul's. Their house is awesome and we were so grateful they let us stay there. We were able to grill out, play some cornhole, go to the park, and recover from the race. The kids had a great time with their cats. Even though ten minutes after being there James' eye was nearly swollen shut and his face was blotchy. Yes, I guess he's allergic to cats. The girls, James, and I drove as fast as we could to Walmart and got some Claritin. After the swelling subsided, you guessed he went cat hunting again. We had the best weekend!

My absolute favorite food is steak. Mya and James love it too. But Mya is truly a girl after her mama and Papa Calamari's heart. She sucked on the t-bone for an hour after we were done eating. Mya you really are just like me! I adore you.

We are 90% done with our yard. The mulch arrived early Saturday. Mya and I went to Lowes to get the best wheel barrow money can buy. The kids loved helping spread the mulch. James even thought it would be awesome to ride his power wheel on the pile. Needless to say after 4 hours we were all black and pooped. But it looks fabulous!!

...long enough! We finally decided to tackle our yard. It has been a five year project that always seems to get put off because it's so much work. Michael had this great idea to eliminate some of the beds to make weeding a lot easier. This meant weeding the beds, moving the mulch, and planting some grass seed. We put rock down a year or two ago and it was barely visible. So we decided to go get more rock to put on top. This lead us to North Shore Stone...2000lbs of rock and 9 hours later, a masterpiece. Well not quite we still have mulch to spread this Saturday. I'm excited to display the after pictures, and for all those HGTV lovers maybe you can Rate My Space...

The shortest Easter Weekend Ever....

We had an awesome weekend with Kiss and Pete. We played games, shopped, and ate and ate and ate and of course stayed up way toooo late! The stay was way too short. We miss them so much already. Mya and James adore their Aunt Kiss Kiss and Uncle Pete. They give Michael and I a huge breather. Actually they prefer them over us...maybe we aren't as cool as I thought?

The Easter Bunny came to our house on Saturday.

This allowed us to focus on Christ and the Resurrection on Sunday. I'm not sure how much my babies understood, but it felt good nonetheless! In all honesty, my favorite part was getting them dressed in their new Easter outfits. (pictures to come) I know repentance is near.

My amazing and wonderful husband surprised me with an Easter basket. It had all my favorites!

Mya has recently expanded her vocabulary. She says: mommy, daddy, "Gees" aka James, Doggie, ball, no no, ouch, uh oh, Kiss Kiss, Grammy, bye bye, hello, phone, baby, etc... She also speaks fluent Chinese. I am amazed at how much she knows and how her mind works. She is definitely a mimi me, she is going to be smart and chatty. She has such a special place in my heart. The love I have for her is indescribable. I didn't have the best opportunity to bond with my mom, so the chance I have to love and nurture my little Mya is priceless.

My kids love the song Move it. (Madagascar) We love music and nothing makes me laugh harder when my kids dance. I think it is the cutest thing ever because they don't care what they look like. I have tried taking more video unsuccessfully of them dancing than anything else. Here is a video of Michael with the babies that he will more than likely kill me for posting. Okay...well he won't kill me, but.... Note: James is clearly unhappy when the video first starts.

Shoe Fettish

Mya is in love with shoes...not just her shoes, but everyone's shoes. Play dates are the most exciting for her because there is a whole pile of new shoes she's never seen before. Forget toys, Mya only needs shoes. She also loves to find my shoes and put them on my feet. I am so amazed, at 19 months she can even put her own shoes on!
